The Vlacherna monastery

The Vlacherna monastery in Corfu

PIETROFOTO · TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Perched on a tiny islet connected to the mainland by a narrow pedestrian causeway, the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna (Panagias Vlachernon) is Corfu’s most iconic and photographed landmark.

Dating back to the late 17th century, the monastery originally served as a active convent for nuns. Named after the famous Vlacherna monastery in Constantinople, it operated as a religious sanctuary for centuries until the last resident left in 1980. Today, the whitewashed chapel is open to visitors, housing sacred icons and a small souvenir area, while remaining a cherished cultural symbol of the Ionian region.

Situated at the tip of the Kanoni peninsula, its stark white walls and classic Byzantine bell tower contrast dramatically with the turquoise waters, making it a dream subject for photography.
