Il Big Ben \u00e8 sicuramente la torre dell’orologio pi\u00f9 famosa al mondo. Si trova nel palazzo di Westminister, palazzo sede delle due camere del Parlamento del Regno Unito.<\/h6>\n

Venne costruita tra il 1834 e il 1858. Il nome iniziale era Great Bell\u00a0<\/em>ma non ci sono notizie certe su come il nome sia cambiato in Big Ben<\/em><\/h6>\n
Esistono due teorie in merito. La prima sostiene che il nome derivi da Sir Benjamin Hall, membro della Camera dei Comuni e supervisore dei lavori per la ricostruzione del palazzo di Westminster, la seconda sostiene invece che il nome derivi da quello del campione dei pesi massimi di pugilato Benjamin Caunt, che combatt\u00e9 il suo ultimo incontro nel 1856. Si pensa che la campana dovesse originariamente esser chiamata “Royal Victoria” in onore della regina Vittoria.<\/h6>\n

La torre non \u00e8 visitabile e non \u00e8 presente neanche un ascensore che permette di arrivare in alto. E’ alta 96 metri.<\/h6>\n
