Hallstatt is a charming village located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Known for its picturesque beauty, Hallstatt overlooks Lake Hallst\u00e4ttersee, surrounded by majestic mountains. This village is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in Europe and has a history dating back thousands of years.<\/h4>\n

Hallstatt is located in the Gmunden district of Upper Austria, on the southwestern shore of Lake Hallst\u00e4tter See, surrounded by the Salzkammergut mountains. The municipality has just over 700 inhabitants (estimated 2025: approximately 737 residents), which contributes to its character as a small, traditional village. The area has been inhabited and exploited for salt since prehistoric times: organised salt extraction is attested at least since the Bronze Age, between 2100 and 800 BC. The name “Hallstatt culture” derives from the rich necropolises and remains found here, which indicates a key phase of the Iron Age in Central Europe.<\/h4>\n

The most interesting part of Hallstatt is undoubtedly the little church overlooking the lake. To take photos like this, you’ll need to leave your car in a paid parking lot in the center of town and walk to the viewpoint. The reflections of the church and the mountains on the lake are particularly beautiful.
\nThe village is very small and parking is limited, so avoid peak periods; check the access regulations.<\/h4>\n
