Designed by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects and completed in 2016, Antwerp’s Port House (Havenhuis) serves as the official headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority. Beyond its striking contemporary aesthetic, the building embodies three major symbolic and conceptual dimensions:
The complex seamlessly merges an ultra-futuristic glass volume directly atop a repurposed, historic Hanseatic-style fire station. This bold architectural synthesis acts as a metaphorical bridge connecting Antwerp’s rich mercantile history with its forward-looking vision for maritime innovation.
Elevated high above the ground, the suspended upper structure visually evokes the prow of a vessel pointed toward the Scheldt River. This dynamic silhouette honors the city’s identity and its role as Europe’s second-largest seaport.
The faceted glass facade consists of alternating transparent and opaque triangular panels. By continuously reflecting and refracting the changing light of the sky and nearby water, the building replicates the sparkling facets of a finely cut diamond—paying tribute to Antwerp’s international standing as the world capital of the diamond trade.
