My photo tips and suggestions for this tunnel

The Sint-Annatunnel (or St. Anna’s Tunnel) in Antwerp is a unique historic pedestrian and cyclist underpass running beneath the Scheldt River. Opened in 1933, it spans approximately 572 meters and sits about 31 meters below the riverbed.

The tunnel is famous for preserving its original Art Deco entrance buildings and iconic, vintage wooden escalators that transport visitors down to the tiled underground tube. Connecting the historic city center to the Linkeroever (Left Bank), it remains a fully functional and beloved architectural landmark offering a nostalgic step back in time.

My photo tips

The bridge is always busy, so it’s difficult to find it without people, but it’s beautiful this way. The view, which tends to get lost because the underground bridge is very long, is also very beautiful. To take great photos, make use of the tunnel’s leading lines—whether symmetrical or asymmetrical.
