All the practical information and how to take photos of the Skogafoss waterfall.

Getting to the waterfall:

The waterfall is easy to reach, just a few meters from the ring road, and there’s convenient parking.

Why it’s worth visiting

This is probably the most famous waterfall in Iceland, so you can’t go to Iceland without seeing it. It’s also very easy to get to. The waterfall is impressive and spectacular.

The most unique thing about this waterfall is that you can get really close.  I didn’t get very close because I had my camera and other equipment and didn’t want to get it wet. I actually stood a little further away to set up my tripod and take photos. I had to clean and protect my camera often because there was a lot of splashing from the waterfall. I was there in the summer, and since summer has long daylight hours, I was forced to visit very early in the morning due to the crowds.

If you visit Iceland in June, the sun never sets, so you can visit the busiest places even at times that we consider nighttime.

Shooting tips:

This is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Iceland, so it’s always very crowded and packed. So I recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the evening. These times are ideal because there are no organized tours, and if you visit in summer, there are many hours of daylight. I took these photos very early in the morning.

Using a tripod is recommended to achieve the silky waterfall effect. Keep in mind that the flow of water is very strong, so you’ll definitely get wet. Wear a raincoat, but above all, protect your camera and clean the lens often, as there may be raindrops.

To avoid taking the classic, common photo, given that it’s a very famous location, my advice is to take a long exposure, make it black and white, and remove the people using AI tools.

You may also find it helpful to remove water droplets from your lens before shooting or in post-production.

Drone flying is not permitted here.
