Sunset in Little Venice in Colmar
PIETROFOTO · TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Tucked away in the enchanting heart of Colmar, France, Little Venice (La Petite Venise) is a fairytale-like neighborhood renowned for its colorful timber-framed houses, cobblestone streets, and serene waterways.
Originally settled by a community of tanners, wine producers, and boatmen during the Middle Ages, the district was strategically built around the Lauch River. The river served as a vital trade route, allowing local merchants to transport goods directly to market on small flat-bottomed boats (barques). The vibrant, multi-colored half-timbered houses lining the canal date back to the 14th to 18th centuries, built using local wood and traditional Alsatian architecture. Its idyllic canals, flower-decked bridges, and pastel-hued buildings evoke the romantic atmosphere of Venice, giving the quarter its iconic name. Capital of Alsatian Heritage: It is one of the best-preserved historic quarters in the Alsace region, showcasing authentic medieval and Renaissance architecture.
The perfect reflections of half-timbered facades on the quiet canal waters make it a world-famous subject for photographers and travel lovers.
