Mealt Falls is a very distinctive waterfall that falls directly into the sea and is located along the east coast of the Isle of Skye, next to the famous basalt cliff of Kilt Rock, on the Trotternish Peninsula.

Mealt Falls takes its name from the waterfall that tumbles over the cliff, fed by nearby Loch Mealt, a freshwater lake just a few meters from the coast. “Mealt” comes from the Gaelic name for the lake (Loch Mealt), simply referring to the source of the water that flows into the sea.

Next to the waterfall rises Kilt Rock, a cliff of basalt columns about 90 meters high, whose design recalls the folds of a Scottish kilt.

The waterfall is easily accessible from the A855 road that runs along the Isle of Skye. There’s convenient parking, and the waterfall is visible. Drone use is permitted and recommended for this waterfall, as shown in these photos.
