The Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies) is an important archive located in Seville
The primary purpose of the Archivo de Indias is to preserve and provide access to archival documents relating to the Spanish Empire’s administration of its overseas territories in the Americas and the Philippines. It contains a vast collection of historical documents dating from the discovery of the Americas to the end of the Spanish colonial period.
The archive was established in 1785 by King Charles III of Spain, who recognized the need to centralize and organize the enormous amount of documentation relating to the Spanish colonial administration. The decision to establish the archive in Seville was influenced by the city’s historical importance as a major port for trade with the Americas.
In recognition of its historical significance and the importance of its collections, the Archivo de Indias, along with the nearby Cathedral and the Alcázar of Seville, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
You can also see a very unusual safe. From the Middle Ages onward, safes with complicated mechanisms were used to store money and other valuables. Many of them were built in Nuremberg, Germany. In this one, you can see the sophisticated locking system, not located on the front of the box, but under the lid.
