Hundertwasserhaus

The Hundertwasserhaus (“Hundertwasser House”) is an apartment building in Vienna, Austria, built according to the idea and concept of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Designed by Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it was built between 1983 and 1986 as public housing by the city of Vienna.
The building houses 53 unique apartments, 15 private terraces, 3 communal terraces, and over 250 trees and shrubs on the roofs. The facades are devoid of straight lines, with irregular floors, asymmetrical windows, and golden onion-shaped columns. The ground floor houses shops and cafes, making it accessible to all as a public attraction.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser revolutionized architecture with an anti-authoritarian and ecological philosophy, opposing modern rationalism. His principles emphasized the harmony between man, nature, and the built world, viewing buildings as living extensions of the human being.
Hundertwasser considered the straight line “atheistic and immoral,” an unnatural imposition that oppresses the human spirit. Instead, he promoted organic, curved, and irregular forms, inspired by rivers, hills, and natural spirals, to unleash creativity and reflect the vitality of the organic world.

Buildings must integrate with the environment, acting as a “bridge” between humanity and nature. He proposed green roofs, trees growing from windows, and natural materials to create space for vegetation, arguing that architecture should “grow” from the site and not impose itself upon it. Every inhabitant has the “right of the window”: the freedom to customize their own portion of the façade around the window, breaking with uniformity. This principle celebrates individuality against the standardization of mass construction, making each space unique and human.

Where they are located

The houses are located in the city, but not very close to the center, so you need to reach it by public transportation (bus or U-Bahn). These houses are very unique in Vienna, especially for the colors and shapes of the windows.
