The Blue Temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten, is located in Chiang Rai, Thailand and is one of Thailand’s most distinctive temples. It represents a stunning fusion of traditional Thai Buddhist architecture and modern art.

The temple’s name, Wat Rong Suea Ten, translates as “Temple of the Dancing Tiger.” This intriguing name has roots in local history: the area was formerly known as “Rong Suea Ten” because wild tigers were said to roam freely there, leaping through the surrounding waterways. The temple was designed by Phuttha Kabkaew, a local artist who had learned from the artistic genius of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist behind the famous White Temple. The master’s influence is evident in the modern and imaginative design, although the Blue Temple has its own unique and distinctive identity.

The temple’s most distinctive feature is its striking blue color—a deep, mesmerizing cobalt blue—which covers the walls, roof, and surrounding structures. This color is symbolically associated with the purity, wisdom, and freedom from materialism that Buddhists aspire to achieve. Blue also represents the spreading of the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) as wide as the sky.

The exterior is a masterpiece of decoration: the temple is adorned with exquisite gold trim, surrounded by blue and gold statues of mythological creatures and Buddhist beings. Two enormous nagas (mythological serpents in Buddhist tradition) serve as guardians at the entrance, their tails waving in exquisite, elegant detail. The temple’s windows are guarded by angelic figures with outstretched wings, while yakshas (female nature spirits) preside over protection from evil.

The centerpiece of the interior is a majestic pearly white porcelain Buddha statue of impressive size (5 meters wide and 6.5 meters high). The statue sits in a meditative posture with one hand outstretched, representing the precise moment when the Buddha attained enlightenment. The image, called Phra Buddha Ratchamongkol Bodi Trilokanat, is framed by powerful columns and creates a fascinating visual contrast with the surrounding blue environment. Buried beneath this Buddhist statue are 88,000 small statues (Phra Rod Lamphun) and numerous silver and gold rings.
